Basic Formula That Works

Rating:

Pros:
  • Motivating and Exciting for students
  • Easy to manage
  • Students self learning
Cons:
I used this series as an educator in the mid 1970's and it worked miracles with my 12 assigned students who could not read. It's a good program to get students started through their first year of reading but will need to be supplemented later with other types of reading.

Best reading program out there.

Twenty-three years ago, at age 5, my son taught himself to read and spell with this program. The workbooks are amazing.

Outdated social/emotional content

Pros:
  • Great phonics/phonemic awareness.
Cons:
  • Outdated social/emotional content.
It broke my heart to have a little girl reading to me today from this, repeating over and over. "This man is fat. Is this man fat? Yes. This is a fat man." Then a picture of the man saying, "I am fat. I am a fat man." I probably heard her correctly read "I am fat" five times today alone. In a time when we stress body positivity and positive self-image, this just seems unnecessary.
